Visit of Prof. Serge Pérez, Director of Research, ESRF, Grenoble, France
On wednesday, 24th February, Serge Pérez, director of research at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF-Grenoble) and director of the Platform for Structural Biology (PSB) will be at the University of Porto and IBMC.
Portugal is a member of both organizations, ESRF (http://www.esrf.eu) and PSB (http://www.psb-grenoble.eu/), and possibly UPorto researchers could take more profit from this situation.
He will give a general seminar at the Rectory (Praça dos Leões), where he will talk about these two organizations and examples of how they are being used on a wide variety of areas. A research seminar in the area of Glycobiology, will be held at IBMC.
The abstracts for both seminars are attached.
Serge Pérez has an extensive CV in science (he has more than 240 papers in the field of glycosciences) as well as a substantial career as a manager.
His scientific areas of interest are:
1. Structural and conformational analysis of oligo, polysaccharides and glycoconjugates in solution and in the solid state.
2. Molecular interactions (polysaccharides-polysaccharides, protein-carbohydrates,..
3. Crystallography, Molecular Modeling and Graphics,NMR spectroscopy,...
4. Enzymic hydrolysis of carbohydrates.
5. Biotechnological applications of carbohydrates.
Serge first became director at the Centre de Recherches Agro-Alimentaires in 1987. As director of research at the CNRS he moved to Grenoble in the 90s to head the Centre de Recherches sur les Macromolécules Végétales, where he had previously worked as a scientist. He left this position after 12 years to become director of research at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF-Grenoble).
He is also de director of the Platform for Structural Biology (PSB). Moreover, he held the position of Director of the Doctoral School of Chemistry and Life Sciences at the Université Joseph Fourier in Grenoble, since 2007.
Serge will be at IBMC the whole afternoon of wednesday (24/02/2010). Please let me know (amdamas@ibmc.up.pt) if you wish to talk with him so that a meeting can be scheduled.
